Campanula: The “Blue Chips”

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

The blue flower campanula—also known as the blue chips—is not exactly what you would call special or rare. In fact, you can easily see campanulas in many gardens and open areas. Although you can see the greatest diversity of campanulas in the Mediterrenean, this flower can be pretty much seen anywhere. Also, these flowers aren’t very useful, especially when you compare them to flowers such as lavender and sage. These two are very stunning blue flowers, and while the blue chips are not shabby, they do not have anything special that can become more prominent than these two, or any other blue flowers. (more…)

Blue Lilies (Lily of the Nile)

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Blue lilies—better known as the African Blue Lily or the Lily of the Nile—are beautiful blue flowers that defy any definition or descriptions. Lilies, according to the Victorian-era Language of Flowers, represent purity. Not surprisingly, the Catholic faith uses lily as a symbol for purity and virginal cleanliness. When you look at a blue lily, it would be quite evident why. Among the many blue flowers in existence today, there is no other flower that can match the clear and pure beauty of the African blue lily. It isn’t very elaborate or flowery, so this means that the blue lily is a very simple flower. However, this exact simplicity makes it very attractive and appealing. (more…)

Blue Flowers for Birthdays

Is it appropriate to give flowers as a birthday present?

In a way, this cannot be answered completely, for what really is an appropriate birthday gift? This is something that can be a matter of taste and preference. However, you cannot deny the fact that flowers can be a rather charming gift, especially to a loved one. Although many may consider flowers as an impractical gift, nothing can match the joy you will get when you receive a beautifully crafted bouquet of flowers. For sure, there are more practical, enjoyable gifts. Flowers do not last forever, after all. However, what would remain is the sensation, the gesture itself, and not the actual physical gift. When you give someone a flower for his birthday, he will remember for the rest of his life.

This only means to say that you really have to give him the best bouquet of flowers you can find or make. And here, blue flowers can be the perfect flower choice.

But why is blue an appropriate color for this purpose? Simple: because blue is a very neutral color. You can give it to a male or a female without offending anyone’s sensibilities. Colors, after all, are often connected to sexuality, and you wouldn’t want to offend anyone by giving them something too manly or feminine. Blue work for both men and women, regardless if it is something as tender as hydrangeas or as hardy as the lily of the nile.

Also, blue conveys a very neutral symbolism. As you may know, colors often represent something, especially vis a vis flowers. Red roses imply something romantic. Therefore, if you are merely giving a flower to a friend, you wouldn’t want to create the impression that you implying something romantic. Blue means purity and peace—a perfect message during birthdays!

Lastly, although there are scores of blue flowers in the market, blue flowers are often perceived as expensive and elegant. This is perhaps due to the fact that associate blue flowers with blue roses. In any case, a dash of blue flowers in a birthday bouquet will make the gift classy and expensive, even unique. Add some Lily of the Nile in a bouquet filled with tulips, roses, and sunflowers and you can instantly make that ordinary looking bouquet into something that exudes elegance.

Of course, it is best if you give a bouquet centered on blue flowers, rather than a bouquet that uses blue flowers to accentuate other flowers. Irises are perfect for birthday bouquets, mainly because of its size. Iris flowers are big and imposing, but they nonetheless have that amazing aura of fragile beauty. What better flower to give some during his birthday than a flower named after the messenger of the Greek gods? Although there are no real blue roses, a bouquet filled with this flower, albeit artificially made, can still impress. Roses, after all, are very popular flowers. Who wouldn’t want to receive a rose for his birthday? A blue bouquet is best garnished with white or yellow flowers for texture.

Blue flowers: Perfect for weddings

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

What could be a more perfect adornment in a wedding than blue flowers?

Indeed, blue flowers are among the more popular choices among brides. This is really surprising, come to think of it. Blue can easily be patterned with any other popular flower color. Blue and white, for one, can make a great combination that can surely turn any wedding venue into something immaculate and stunning. Of course, blue flowers also make for great wedding bouquets. Blue isn’t exactly what you would call a unique color for a flower, especially in a wedding, but they remain ephemerally beautiful anyway.

Hydrangea, for instance, is one of the more popular choices for blue flowers. It may because this blue flower has earned instant fame, so to speak, because of its prominence in the earlier seasons of the television show Desperate Housewives or simply because it is a lovely flower. Just the same, this blue flower remains common yet quite loved. Hydrangeas are available in two arrangements: round and large (often called the mophead) and flat and round (called the lacetop). Actually, hydrangea isn’t really exactly blue; its actual shade is more light and dark purple than blue. Still, it has that tinge of blue that makes it a perfect blue flower for weddings.

Hydrangeas are abundant from June to August, so this blue flower should be cheap around this time of the year.

The Forget-me-not, which is officially named the Myosotis, is also a popular blue flower. Just like the Hydrangea, the Forget-me-not is somewhat small, so it is better to use this flower along with other bigger flowers to add texture to the flower formation. It also works well with the Star of Bethlehem, specifically the white ones. Again, like the Hydrangea, the Forget-me-not is very common, although that doesn’t really change the fact that it looks amazing, especially when it is combined with other flowers.

Yet another filler is the Sea Holly. Still, despite that, it pretty much works on its own just the same. Its beauty is unlike any other, especially when you combine it with flowers such as the buttonhole or the boutonniere. However, those looking for your typical flower type may be disappointed since it isn’t too “flowery. But just the same, this makes for a great wedding flower if you are looking for something simple and less elaborate. Also, this might make for a great flower for the groom too, since it doesn’t have that feminine feel of flowers that may seem too elaborate.

On the other hand, the Delphiniums work great alone when it is used prominently and with great volume. Their color range is also quite wide—from sky blue to dark blue—so it works better than the other supposed blue flowers that are actually just purple in reality.

In any case, these blue flowers work wonderfully with weddings. They have that pure and ephemeral feeling that cannot be matched by any other flower. After all, blue is the symbol of hope and longing. It is obviously appropriate for a wedding.
